Art fix in New Plymouth




Len Lye's other public sculpture in New Zealand (besides the one on Welllington Harbour) is located on the beachfront in New Plymouth. Photo doesn't do it justice, of course, but it's pretty cool and I bet it sways pretty good in a stiff breeze.

I went to the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery where, as it says, much of his work is housed. Only thing is, none of it is on public display. There is a plan underway (delayed due to gov't funding cuts...sound familiar?) to open a building dedicated to his work. I did see some of his 50's work with film which was pretty cool.
Nice little contemporary art gallery, actually a bit too small. Good way to spend an hour. I spent a bit longer to sit and watch some of the film archives. John Reynolds, an Auckland artist (not the BC disgraced/disgraceful politician) had an interesting text-based list-obsessed exhibit.
